Tuakana Teina Learning

Today while a majority of the girls were out at a kapa haka performance, a small group of us shared our knowledge of poi with Room 17.

We talked about traditional poi, poi that are used today and a little bit of information about the poi toa. We also shared with the class a few basic movements.

Hopefully you all learnt something new Room 17!

Below are some photos of us showing Room 17 their poi movements.

Poi Toa

Our topic this term is Traditional Māori Games and Sports. A sport we have been focusing on this week is Poi Toa. It is similar to the poi used to perform in kapa haka, but we get to play sports with it. In the olden days, our ancestors would use the poi to strengthen their wrists and prepare themselves for warfare.

We have not used the traditional materials instead, we used:

*Tarpoline
*Duct Tape
*Newspaper
*Rope
*Plastic Bag
*Scissors

Check out some photos of us making them:

Ngā kupu mahi

We are learning a range of different verbs for our reo Maori sentences. To help us learn these sentences we made flash cards and created our own games to help us. Hopefully by the end of this term we will be able to confidently write, translate, understand and say these verbs in an active sentence.

Cross country!

During Te Wiki o te reo Māori we also had our school cross country run. All of us who attended school that day participated in the race. Some of us were fortunate enough to place in top 8.

Congratulations to:

*Emma who came 2nd for the year 5 girls
*Leilani-mei who came 6th for the year 7 girls
*Tamara who came 6th for the year 8 girls
*Serenade who came 7th for the year 8 girls

Leilani and Tamara will be competing at the central counties tournament this week! Emma will also race for her age group later on in the term, all the best girls!
